The winner gets: The winner of Connecticut-Chattanooga

Summary: The Cougars finished in a three-tie for the Mountain West Conference championship with Utah and New Mexico. They lost to San Diego State in the MWC tournament semifinals. The Aggies rode a six-game winning streak toward the end of the season to finish in a four-way tie for fourth in the Big 12. A&M lost to Texas Tech in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals. This is a re-match of the 2008 first round meeting between the Cougars and Aggies. A&M won, 67-62

 


Key Players: BYU – Lee Cummard (16.8 ppg), G; Jimmer Fredette (16.2 ppg), G. Texas A&M – Josh Carter (14.1 ppg), G; Donald Sloan (11.7 ppg, 3.0 apg), G

Key stat: BYU – The Cougars have not advanced past the first round of the tournament since the 1993 tournament (0-6). A&M – Averages nearly four blocks per game.

BYU will win: Because it’s due. The Cougars and Missouri have the distinction of making the most appearances in NCAA tournament history (22) without winning the title. The Cougars need a big game from Cummard.

Texas A&M will win: If Sloan can effectively run the Aggie offense and the post play can step up and impose its will.

Prediction: Texas A&M 69, BYU 63
