Longhorns Bury Miners

The Texas Longhorns first three games have been riddled with slow starts and the game plan all week from Mack Brown was to start fast, play well, and get the game over by halftime. Check, check and check. The Longhorns had no trouble burying UTEP, running out to a 40 point lead at halftime and coasted to a 64-7 victory.

Texas was running on all cylinders, as every facet of the Longhorns team was on top of their game. The defense was dominant, shutting out the Miners and limiting them to 53 total yards, while forcing five turnovers. Offensively, Colt McCoy threw an early interception that was returned for a touchdown, but rebounded to pass for 286 yards and three touchdowns. Jordan Shipley racked up another 100 yard performance, teaming up with Dan Buckner for 16 receptions, 193 yards and three touchdowns. The Longhorns finished with 639 total yards. The special teams also contributed as freshman D.J. Monroe returned a kickoff 91yards for a touchdown, becoming the first Longhorns player to return two kickoffs for touchdowns.

This was a performance that Mack Brown had to be happy with because the Longhorns have two weeks off before hosting Colorado. The coaching staff can now do more teaching than scolding the next couple of weeks. The game in two weeks against the Buffaloes should be yet another chance to sharpen their game on both sides of the ball before the Longhorns hit the hardest part of their schedule, Oklahoma, at Missouri, and at Oklahoma State.

Texas has now started 4-0 for the fourth time in the last five years.
