Aggies fall to LonghornsTexas A&M head football coach Mike Sherman hinted this week that the Aggies may have achieved their goals this year. That leaves fans wondering if the beleaguered head coach has little hopes his lowly Aggies can topple Texas. Game time is 7 p.m. CT on ESPN HD. The venue will be Kyle Field in College Station. The Longhorns (11-0, 5-0 Big 12) are second in the USA-Today poll, third in the AP, and third in the BCS. The Las Vegas odds makers give the Longhorns a 22-point edge. A 10-point victory may be regarded as a net loss to the Horns. Longhorn coach Mack Brown may need to pile on some style points to impress pollsters.
Johnson completed 26 of 33 passes for 342 yards, but an interception in the end zone in the third quarter with 3:08 on the clock cost the Aggies possibly one TD. At times, it appeared that Johnson was carrying the Aggies on his throwing arm and legs. He was the leading rusher with 97 yards on 26 carries. Aggies (6-6, 3-5) finish the season and will await a bowl bid. McCoy lifted his Heisman hopes on one of his best days this year. The Longhorns (11-0, 8-0) play Nebraska next week for the Big 12 championship. The senior quarterback took advantage of an Aggie all for nothing blitz to go 65 yards up the middle for a touchdown in the second quarter. That made the score 14-7. The Horns never relinquished their lead.
Some 84,671 attended the game broadcast nationally on ESPN. The The 88 points scored was the highest combined point total in the entire history of the Aggie-Longhorn series. Jerrod Johnson broke Aggie quarterback Kevin Murray’s 23-year-old record for touchdown passes. Johnson’s four TD gave him 51 for his career. Johnson’s 97 yards rushing was a season high and the most the Longhorns have given up this season. The Aggies best bowl hopes are with the Independence Bowl, the Texas Bowl, and the Alamo Bowl.
