Colorado ends Texas A&M’s two-game win streak, 35-34
Colorado tight end Patrick Devenny made a one-hand catch to set up a 35-34 Buffalo victory in Boulder over the Texas A&M Aggies Saturday. The Aggies had a chance to put the football game out of reach at the three-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Aggie Coach Mike Sherman decided to go for a field goal, making it 34-28. The drive started with Aggie running back Cyrus Gray returning a CU kickoff to the 45 yards to the Aggie 45. A 15-yard penalty was assessed CU player Jalil Brown. The Aggies subsequently began the drive on the CU 40. Quarterback Jerrod Johnson passed to wide receiver Ryan Tannehill for 13 yards to the CU 27 and a first down. Running back Christine Michael ran for three yards. Johnson passed 17 yards to receiver Ryan Swope who took it down to the CU 7. Then Aggies began to fall apart. Johnson passed incomplete. Michael lost four yards back to the Aggie 11. Johnson passed on third down to the CU three leaving it fourth and goal. Sherman sent in the field goal unit. “With the amount of time left on the clock. I thought it was the right decision to make, and I would do it again,” Sherman told a post-game press conference. It appeared to many of the fans and media that the field goal call lost Sherman and the Aggies the game.
Following the ensuing kickoff, CU just took six plays for Buffalo QB Tyler Hansen to toss a 45 yarder down to the Aggie 22. The next pass was to tight end Patrick Devenny for a touchdown. The extra point kick made it Colorado 35, Texas A&M 34. The Aggies gave up first downs on third and long all day. “We’ve been a better third down team than we were today,” Sherman said. After they failed field goal the Aggies turned generous in turnovers. After CU went up 35-34, the Aggies took the ensuing kickoff and ran four plays. Johnson threw an interception to CU’s Anthony Perkins. The Buffalos last drive stalled with 1:08 left on the clock. CU punted, but the Aggie punt returner fumbled the ball at the Aggie 35.
“We lost our punt returner; then we went with our backup. We had a lot of confidence we would win,” Sherman said. The Aggies (5-4, 2-3 Big 12) ended a two-game winning streak. They must rely on a victory in the next three games to become bowl eligible. The Aggies play Oklahoma in Norman next week. They play a surging Baylor team before finishing out against Texas University at Kyle Field in College Station. Colorado (3-6, 2-3) broke a three-game losing skid to keep their bowl hopes alive. “They hung there with us, and we never really put the closer on them. They battled back. We came up on the short end,” Sherman said. The Aggies missed a field goal in the first half.
