Big 12 Storylines Week Three
Week three in the Big 12 came with only a few games that were even competitive on Saturday. Most teams faced inferior opponents and finished them off early. The game of the week was Texas Tech traveling to Texas, in a game that had blowout written all over it before the game even started.
Texas fans were ready for a blowout; instead the Longhorns had another tight one with the Red Raiders before pulling away late for a 34-24 victory. Colt McCoy probably had his worse game in two years as he struggled all night and threw two interceptions.
However, the special teams and defense came through for the Longhorns and won them the game on this night.
There was a record set this week as Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones passed for an Oklahoma freshman record six touchdowns in the Sooners 45-0 blowout win over Tulsa.
Colorado finally got a win on the board with a 28-0 win over Wyoming. The Buffaloes are still off to a 1-2 start, but losing this week would have really put them in a tough position heading into their Big 12 schedule.
Nebraska had a great chance to win at Virginia Tech before falling apart at the end,
losing 16-15. Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw an 81yard pass to Danny Coale that set up a three yard Taylor touchdown pass to squash the Cornhuskers upset bid. Even more disappointing is the fact that Nebraska had ample opportunities to put the game away on offense but could not capitalize. The Cornhuskers now have lost 21 out of their last 22 games against top 20 teams.
Baylor came out in the first week with a nice upset of Wake Forest on the road and it looked like there might be big things to come for the Bears. Well there still might be, but after losing at home to UConn 30-22, it shows the Bears still have a ways to go to be a consistent winner.
Texas A&M has started off well with wins in their first two games this season. However, giving up 30 points to Utah State at home is something the Aggies will have to work on when they start their conference schedule. With the offenses in the Big 12 light years ahead of Utah State’s, the defensive coaches will have to right the ship fast.
Kansas State went on the road and lost at UCLA 23- 9, in a game that the Wildcats defense played pretty solidly. The problem for the Wildcats thus far has been their offense. They just have not been able to put points on the board, and that is something that will have to change when they get into their conference schedule. With most teams in the Big 12 averaging 30 points or more coach Snyder will have to get his offense in gear. The Wildcats have only averaged 15 points a game through three games this season.
Iowa State bounced back after last week’s stomping against rival Iowa by snapping their 17 game road losing streak with a 34-14 win at Kent State. This was the Cyclones first road win in four years. Quarterback Austen Arnaud accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) in the win.
