Pig on a Bus

By Big12-Fans Writer Jason Brooks

I asked a girl out on a date the other night. It was the first time in a few years that I actually asked a girl out on a date (I know this sounds strange but I have been in a serious relationship up until about 6 months ago). I was scared, nervous, and I wasn’t even sure that I had enough nerve to actually ask this girl out on a date. After all, she is a rather good-looking woman, and I; well lets just say I’m not the best looking guy in the world. So I finally decided that the best way to do it was to be confident. While I was building up my confidence I envisioned eating dinner, watching a movie, talking, and hopefully a good night kiss. After a bit, I approached this girl and proceeded with idle small talk. Soon the engine was warm, and it was time for this plane to either get airborne, or put the plane back in the hanger. The wheels started to turn, and I was taxiing down the runway. I had clearance from the tower, and I was well on my way towards take off when, suddenly, she said no to a date. I got shot down before I could even get airborne.

I have spent the last couple of weeks thinking about how emotions run very deep in sports. Then as I was contemplating how I would ask this girl out I actually began to think about how this really does relate to sports. What an odd time to think about sports huh (hey I was extremely nervous and starting to crack I had to do something to calm down)? Seriously though, sports plays such an important role in human interaction. How? Lets take a look at a few things.

How many Red Sox and Yankee’s fans do you know that are married? One of my first arguments with my ex took place during the ALCS a couple of years ago. She is a Red Sox fan, and I, well lets just say that even though I am in the Midwest, am a diehard Yankee’s fan. Ben Affleck and J. Lo couldn’t get past the rivalry, with Ben being from Boston, and J. Lo being from Bronx. Ultimately it broke them up. Okay, maybe that wasn’t what broke them up, but it had to play a factor. I know I personally could never get married to a Colorado Buffalo’s, Detroit Redwings, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chief’s, or a Boston Red Sox fan. Ok let’s go past personal relationships.

Have you ever seen those people at the games that are shirtless, painted, and braving the elements this way? Have you been one of those people? These people love their team. They celebrate the highs, and survive the lows. Some people have rituals for big games. I know every time NU is on TV my friends and I gather around my small TV with a fresh bottle of Jaegermeister, and a couple of racks of Pork Spare ribs that I have cooked up that day. Hey, it started last summer, and has turned into tradition.

I get nervous before every big game throughout the year, and I am sure that you do to. Fights break out at sporting venues, love breaks out at sporting venues, and all around camaraderie breaks out at sporting venues. You see, sports are very emotional, and it’s an integral part of human interaction. It gives us a chance to escape reality without really leaving reality.

While I got shot down asking this girl out, I won’t give up. I am sure that every time I begin to get nervous asking a girl out, I will begin to think about sports to calm my nerves.
