Texas A&M vs. Texas Tech football preview

Aggies look for improvement as they host #7 Texas Tech

The Aggies’ emotions have been like the stock market. When they see the offensive stats their spirits soar. When they see the final score, their spirits plunge.

The hapless Texas A&M (2-4, 0-2 Big 12) has allowed 100 points in the last two games. No amount of offense this team can produce can overcome that disadvantage. The Aggies are in free fall. The only question is: Can Head Coach Mike Sherman pull the Aggies out of the nose dive?

The Aggies will play Texas Tech Saturday at Kyle Field.

Coach Mike Leach has his team’s offense revved up. The Red Raiders (6-0, 2-0 Big 12) have the hottest passing offense in the Big 12 and the NCAA. They will be facing one of the poorest defenses in the Big 12 and the NCAA. This promises to produce a lot of fireworks for the Tech offense, too.

Meanwhile, some of the media covering Aggie sports have thrown the towel. This followed a malaise rippling through a fan base once as avid as any in the nation. Only a handful of Aggies remained in the stands in the third quarter of last week’s blowout loss to Kansas State.

This week the Houston Chronicle announced that it would no longer send a beat reporter to College Station. Instead they will pool coverage with the San Antonio Express-News. That produced a flurry of hate mail directed at the Chronicle and other Aggies on the only remaining Chron.com blog site. The Chron.com announced it will dump the blog too.

To make matters worse, ESPN named the Aggies to the Bottom 10 for the second time this season. CoachesHotSeat moved Sherman up to No. 4. Covers.com, a websites for bettors, dropped the Aggies from 89th to 95th, just above New Mexico State and Miami of Ohio. Jeff Sagarin bottomed the Aggies out in the Big 12. The Aggies’ schedule will not help. It includes Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa State, and Baylor.

Aggie Athletic director “Dollar” Bill Byrne devoted more space to his car being racked up on a slab of concrete than he did to the football program. The Aggie website headlined a woman’s soccer game where the winning and only goal was scored 80 minutes into the game.

The little doubt who will win Saturday’s game. The only question to be decided is will the 12 th Man fan base show up for the game and which quarter will they bolt for the gates.
