Sooners Crush AggiesTexas A&M falls to Oklahoma 66-28
The Oklahoma Sooners crushed the Texas A&M Aggies 66-28 Saturday before a claimed 85,603 at Kyle Field in College Station. The loss leaves no doubt that Head Coach Mike Sherman’s Aggies are no better than Dennis Franchione’s disastrous first season in the Big 12. Franchione finished that season with a record of 4-8. Sherman’s first season may be equally as bad. The win for the Sooners (9-1 overall, 5-1 Big 12) sets up a showdown next Saturday in Norman against the high flying Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-0, 6-0 Big 12). Tech crushed Oklahoma State, 56-20.
The Aggies (4-6, 2-4 Big 12) are all but eliminated for any chance for a post season appearance. The loss sets up a game against Baylor (3-7, 1-5 Big 12) in Waco. The Bears-Aggie game will probably decide who will occupy the absolute cellar of the Big 12 South. Meanwhile, the Aggies are left to ponder a plethora of dubious records. The 66 points were the most ever scored on an Aggie team at Kyle Field. The Sooners also own the record for the most points ever scored on an Aggie team, 77-0 at Norman in 2003. The Sooners are 17-10 overall against the Aggies and 4-5 at Kyle Field. The official attendance was 85,603, but the Kyle Field end zone was mostly empty. The stadium became more and more empty as the game progressed. The Sooners opened the first quarter with three touchdowns. They took the kickoff and scored on drives of four plays, 12 plays, and 3 plays. The Aggies punted on their first four possessions. The only hiccups for the Sooner machine were two missed field goals. It was the last home game of the season for the Aggies and the last home game for 26 seniors. Stephen McGee got to play his final senior home game. He came in the third quarter and played out the game. Sherman installed McGee after starter sophomore Jerrod Johnson threw two interceptions. Both errant tosses were converted into Sooners touchdowns. Earlier Johnson was flagged for intentional grounding.
It was a bad day for Johnson. He was 11 of 31 with two interceptions. He was sacked three times. His streak of interception free passes ended at 219. McGee, who was still nursing a sore shoulder, was 10 for 19 for 82 yards. He engineered the final Aggie touchdown. It came in the fourth quarter after an 11-play 83-yard drive capped by a two-yard run by Fullback Jorvorskie Lane. The Sooners had 653 yards of total offense. Some 328 yards were on the ground. Aggie Tailback Cyrus Gray’s star rose immeasurably. The true freshman put up a record 261 yards on seven kickoff returns. His best effort was a 97-yarder for a TD in the third quarter. It was a record for an Aggie freshman. The most unbelievable “record” has to be A&M’s boast that the game attendance put the Aggie season gate total over the half million mark!
