Aggies blown out by Miami

No one would have guessed that the Aggies would start 0-2 at Kyle Field. Before the end of the first quarter in Saturday’s game between the Texas A&M Aggies and the Miami Hurricanes, no one had any doubt.

Unlike the blow out loss in Miami, the Aggies -- led by first time starter Quarterback Jerrod Johnson -- continued to score. Miami went up 31-0 in last year’s debacle before Hurricane Coach Randy Shannon emptied his bench. This year, the Aggies scored first. It was a 62-yard pass-and-run off the screen. Tailback Mike Goodson took it all the way.

The Hurricanes turned up the heat early with a barrage of big plays in the first half. The Canes had five explosive plays of 18-plus yards or more. It started with a 29-yard pass completion to receiver Kayne Farquarson. Then Miami running back had back-to-back 19-yard and 51-yard runs for touchdowns.

It was a 21-yard pass completion with 20-seconds left in the second quarter that doomed the Aggies. Farquarson got open on blown pass coverage. He raced into the end zone and stood all alone, waiting for the ball for an easy six-pointer. That made the score, 24-10.

The Aggies got their first third quarter score of the season. It came with 01:55 left and capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive. The scoring play was an 18-yard pass from Jerrod Johnson to wide receiver Jeff Fuller.

Sherman’s offense doesn’t have any third quarter zip. Every team this year has made halftime adjustments and shut down the Aggies in the third quarter.

Johnson had his ups and downs in his first start. He threw one interception. He fumbled once. That fumble was costly. He was wrapped up by a Miami defender, but unwisely attempted to pass. Miami defender picked up the ball and ran it two yards for a TD, making it 41-10.

Statistically, the Aggies have hit the bottom of the Big 12. They are 12 th in the total offense, total defense, rush defense, scoring offense, scoring defense, and sacks allowed.

Fullback Jorvorskie Lane started, but he failed to score. He stands one TD away from breaking the all-time touchdown record at A&M. He had 11 rushing attempts for -3 yards. ESPN named Lane as “the biggest decoy in the Big 12.”

Mike Goodson led all Aggie rushers with 67 yards on 12 attempts. Not on his yardage total with the screen pass he caught on the left side on the second play in the first half. He took it across the field and scored down the right sideline. Goodson continues to be dangerously under-utilized.

Jeff Sagarin dropped Texas A&M from 56 th to 65 th in his weekly ratings. The Aggies managed to stay ahead of New Mexico in the Covers.com rating at 75 th.

The Aggies have a chance to even their record this week. They play Army (0-3) at Kyle Field at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. It will be televised on Versus.
