Aggies Beat CU, 24-17

Texas A&M get Big 12 win over Colorado

“You should have seen the scene in the locker room. You would have thought we won a championship!” Aggie safety Trent Hunter said after Texas A&M Saturday won over Colorado, 24-17.

The Aggies (4-5 overall, 2-3 Big 12) and head Coach Mike Sherman won their first two games in a row this season. It was the first conference win at Kyle Field. Sadly, many Aggies decided to stay away. Only 78,121 attended. Kyle Field’s capacity is 86,000.

The Aggies did something they have never done this season. They came out and won it with a 21-point effort in the third quarter. It may have be a direct result of a very public and very animated scolding that Sherman gave his offense on the sideline just before the third quarter.

“I was pretty upset with our offense. I didn’t think the offense was performing to its level. The defense was keeping us in the game,” Sherman told a post game news conference.

The Aggies were trailing 10-3 at the half.

Sophomore Quarterback Jerrod Johnson third quarter production included a six-play 68-yard drive, a 59-yard-pass-and-run touchdown to freshman wide receiver Jeff Fuller, and a six-play 74-yard drive. Every third quarter drive was topped off by scoring passes.

Johnson had 214 yards passing and three TD’s for the day. Fuller had 10 catches for 95 yards and two TD’s. Ryan Tannehill had nine catches for 80 yards and one TD.

The Aggies rolled up 224 yards of offense in the third quarter. Johnson took over the starting role from Senior Stephen McGee in the second game. He has thrown 18 touchdown passes. In addition, he has thrown for more than 200 yards in the last five games. He has thrown for 1,297 yards.

The loss drops the Buffalos to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12.

It wasn’t all offense. The defense kept the Buffalos off the board in the third quarter. Trent Hunter intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter. Defensive lineman Cyril Obiozor got back-to-back sacks for losses in the fourth quarter.

The Aggies now will face Oklahoma and a resurgent Baylor team before they finish the season against Texas in Austin. It would be considered almost a miracle if the Aggies could obtain the necessary victories to qualify for post season play. Both Texas and Oklahoma are still fighting for a position in the Big 12 Championship game.

The Buffalos probably blew their chance for post-season play. They play Iowa State next week. Then they finish against Oklahoma State and Nebraska.

One ugly moment in the game resulted in a broken fibula (leg) to CU tailback Rodney Stewart. A&M linebacker Von Miller was flagged for a horse collar tackle on the play.
