Aggies get win over Army at Kyle Field
Sherman was pleased with the 21-17 win, but it was a contest between of two of the worst programs in Division I football. The Aggies came in with a -1-2 record. The Army Black Knights were 0-3. Both teams have been members of ESPN’s Bottom 10. Aggie Coach Mike Sherman said he pleased with the return to form by Fullback Jorvorskie Lane, running out of tailback. Lane’s six straight rushes started on the second play of a crucial drive. A&M was on the Army 43 with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter. Michael Goodson rushed for nine yards. Then on second and one, Lane ran three yards to the 37 for a first down. Lane moved the ball 12 yards to the 25 for a second first down. He followed that by runs of four yards, three yards, and two yards. Then on fourth and one on the Army 16, he ran 10 yards to the six for a first down. That ran out the clock.
The six carries gained 34 yards. Lane had 38 yards on seven rushes for the game. Army brought its triple option game behind quarterback Chip Bowen who rushed 34 times for 128 yards. Bowen also had four yards passing on one completion. After a scoreless first quarter, Aggie quarterback Stephen McGee (7-9-109) tossed a 42-yard touchdown to wide receiver Jeff Fuller to get on the scoreboard. Army came right back with an eight-play 80-yard drive. Army back Tony Dace got the score on a nine-yard run. The half ended with the score at 14-7 on Aggie defensive lineman Paul Freeney’s 49-yard fumble recovery and runback. The fumble by Bowden was forced for middle linebacker Matt Featherston. McGee started at quarterback but went down in the second quarter. He was sacked and injured his right (throwing) shoulder. Sophomore Jerrod Johnson came in to play the remainder of the game. Johnson, who had a sore shoulder, threw for 53 yards on 10 passes and six completions.
Big 12 league play starts Saturday against Oklahoma State in Stillwater, OK. Coach Mike Sherman faces a formidable task of pulling the team together for league play. Barring a miracle, the Aggies face only two more possible winnable games. The Jeff Sagarin rewarded the Aggies performance by dropping them to 109 th in his NCAA Division 1 ratings. They are firmly in last place in Sagarin’s Big 12 ratings. Army’s record falls to 0-4. The Aggies are 2-2.
